Brief: Create a name, brand identity, and package system including three varieties of heirloom tomato seeds.
Concept: The name Sister Seeds represents a family owned company that offers quality organic products. The package focuses on the finished product of a sliced tomato, emphasizing the bold colors of Sister Seeds’ natural and chemical free vegetables. The three packages create a simple yet memorable identity.
Deliverables: Three seed packages.
Brief: Create a brand identity and logo for an alternative hair salon which specializes in unique hair ink.
Concept: One of the latest trends in hair styling is the use of unnatural hair coloring among men and women. I myself have experimented with various outrageous hair inks, so I decided to incorporate photos of my own hair in the logo's variations. The "S" word-mark represents the companies playful and unique style, while also giving customers a look at what the salon is capable of creating.
Deliverables: Logo, letterhead, business cards, and salon decoration.
Brief: Create a design for skateboard decks.
Concept: I grew up around a culture which was largely influenced by skateboarding, it seemed to be the best form of transportation to and from the beach for us who were too young to drive. Having a board with a unique piece of art makes it that much more special for its owner, like having an iPhone case that sets your phone apart from the masses. For this brand I created illustrated grip tape that sits on top of the board. The illustrations are simple and look somewhat tarnished or rubbed off, as a well ridden skateboard should look.
Deliverables: Skateboard grip tape.
Brief: Design and produce a prototype for a responsive web application which relates to nutrition and or fitness.
Group Members: Charlotte Hills, Christie Landrie, Brandon Matlock
Concept: We decided to create an application with a simple interface which people could navigate with ease. FitFriends acts as a social media site which allows the user to share and learn new fitness tips. Instead of focusing on calorie counting, points, and levels, we wanted to create a space where people could inspire one and other and meet friends with similar goals. I focused on creating the News Feed portion of the application.
Deliverables: Application for iPhone and iPad.
Brief: Redesign a book that has been banned from the public. The new design should represent why the book was banned. Print, sew and bind the book by hand.
Concept: I chose “The Story of Little Black Sambo” by Helen Bannerman. My mother read this story to me as a child, so I already held a connection to it. As I researched why the book was banned, I discovered that the "racist" illustrations and vocabulary were the main causes. The illustrations were said to be too similar to “blackface” images which once portrayed a negative stereotype of African Americans. I exaagerated these illustrations even further in my version by only using black, white, and red. In edition I picked out words which were, and still are considered racist, and gave their definitions. As I child I never made the racist connection between the drawings or vocabulary, so I wanted to make it as obvious as possible in my version. This recreation exaggerates the negative aspects and gives historical context, explaining why the book was taken off the shelves.
Deliverables: Book printed jacket.
Brief: Create a poster for the rock band "Gunner Gunner."
Concept: "Gunner Gunner" is a rock band from my home town in Southern California, made up of five male musicians who are truly passionate about making real music and performing over the top shows. Their musical influences are bands such as Guns N' Roses and Stone Temple Pilots. For this poster I placed a photo of the band against a bold background with the band's signature colors, red and black.
Deliverables: Poster.
